The words of car export, explained.

Every term you will meet on a quote, an invoice, a shipping document or a registration file, in one paragraph each. Ask us on WhatsApp if one is missing.

GCC specGulf Cooperation Council specification

A car built for the Gulf market: stronger cooling and air conditioning, dust-sealed cabin, often a larger engine. Left-hand drive, like Europe and Africa. Everything else is a regular car; the EU asks for a certificate of conformity or an individual approval before registration.

GSO certificateGulf Standards Organization conformity certificate

A certificate stating that the car meets the Gulf standards. Some destination countries, in the Gulf and in Africa, require it at customs. We obtain it in Dubai when your country asks for it; it is listed on the invoice.

Export certificateUAE de-registration for export

The document the UAE authorities issue when a car leaves the country for good: the car is removed from the UAE registry and the certificate proves it. Your country asks for it to register the car. Issued in Dubai through the RTA, included in our service.

RTARoads and Transport Authority, Dubai

The Dubai authority that registers, inspects and de-registers vehicles. The export certificate and the de-registration of a car bought in Dubai go through it.

CoCCertificate of Conformity

The manufacturer’s statement that a car matches a European type approval. With a CoC, registration in the EU is direct, in about ten days in France. Most European brands sold in the UAE can get one; many American and Japanese models cannot, and go through individual approval.

Individual approvalRTI, DREAL and UTAC in France

The registration route for a car without a certificate of conformity: a technical inspection of the car itself, by UTAC or the regional DREAL in France, then a national approval. Count three to four weeks and a few hundred euros. Pick-ups, muscle cars and the Land Cruiser take this route.

Form 846AFrench customs clearance certificate

The certificate French customs issue once import duty and VAT are paid on a car arriving from outside the EU. It is required to register the car in France. Your customs broker obtains it at clearance.

Bill of lading (BL)The shipping line’s transport document

The shipping line’s receipt for the car and the contract of carriage, issued when the container or the car is loaded. Its number follows the vessel on the line’s website, and the original releases the car at the port of arrival. We send it to you as soon as it is issued.

RoRoRoll-on roll-off

A vessel the car is driven onto, on its own wheels, and parked on a deck. Cheaper than a container for a single car and fast to load, but no personal items inside the car and less protection from weather and handling. Not every port has a RoRo line from Dubai.

Shared containerConsolidated 40-foot container

Two to four cars in one 40-foot container, each owner paying a share. The usual way we ship: the car is sealed from loading to arrival, and the rate is published per car on the destinations page. A dedicated container for one car costs more.

Jebel AliPort of Dubai

The largest port in the Middle East, in Dubai, where cars bought in the UAE are loaded. Weekly departures with Maersk, CMA CGM, MSC and COSCO to Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas.

Pro forma invoiceThe invoice issued before payment

The document that states the car, its price, our service fee, the export certificate and the freight to your port, before you pay. You transfer the amount to our UAE business account against it; the final invoice follows. Both name DUBAI EXPORT AUTO FZE.

Customs duty and VATImport taxes at destination

Taxes paid in your country when the car clears customs, not to us. In the EU, generally 10% duty on a car (22% on a pick-up or utility vehicle) and import VAT at your country’s rate, both on the car’s value plus freight. Our estimator and your quote show them before you commit.

Landed costThe total at your port

Everything the car costs once it reaches your port: the price of the car, our service fee, the export certificate and the shipping. Duties, VAT and registration come on top and depend on your country.

VINVehicle identification number

The 17-character chassis number that identifies a car for life. It is on the inspection report, the invoice, the bill of lading and the export certificate, so every document names the same car.
